The case for it

Why maintenance is worth paying for

Most people would not drive 30,000 miles without an oil change, then run a system that works 3,000 hours a year for a decade without anyone opening it up. The reason is simple: a car tells you. A heat pump just quietly gets worse.

What follows is the honest case, with the sources named. None of it is our own research.

  1. It costs less than the breakdown

Regular maintenance is widely credited with cutting the risk of a costly breakdown by up to 95%. The Department of Energy puts the efficiency loss from a neglected system at up to 30% of the energy it uses — which on a Midlands summer bill is not a rounding error.

  2. It keeps your warranty alive

Nearly every manufacturer requires proof of annual maintenance when a part is claimed under warranty. A compressor is an expensive thing to discover this about. We keep the records so the claim goes through.

  3. It is the cheapest air quality work there is

The EPA reports indoor pollutant levels running two to five times outdoor levels, and in extreme cases more than a hundred times. A clean coil, a clean drain and a filter that fits do more for the air in the house than most products sold to improve it.

  4. It is a safety check

The most common source of a carbon monoxide leak is a cracked heat exchanger, and a maintenance visit includes a CO test that finds it. The CDC is clear that even low-level exposure causes real harm. This is the part of the visit nobody thinks about and nobody should skip.

  5. It buys the system years

Equipment that is clean, correctly charged and not fighting its own airflow lasts longer. Deferring a replacement by three or four years is the single largest sum of money maintenance saves.
